Chocolate can be found on every corner in Buenos Aires. However, to source the most delicious treats, you need to know where to go. Here are our recommendations for the most impressive chocolatiers in Buenos Aires.

Traditionally, chocolate in Argentina was associated with snowy settings in ski resort locations such as San Carlos de Bariloche. Fortunately for us, decadent truffles, exquisite bonbons and classic “chocolate en rama,” have arrived to Buenos Aires. Whether you’re looking to satisfy a craving or track down gifts your loved ones will actually like, head to one of the following shops and enjoy.

El Viejo Oso

El Viejo Oso began as a small marzipan business in the 40s. They eventually evolved into a classic German style chocolatier in the 90s and have been a favorite on the scene ever since. Their claim to fame are the decadent truffles that they offer in a variety of flavors, such as coffee, rum, cognac and cherry. Mix and max to try as many as you can. Their original shop was tucked away in a gallery in la Lucila, and was the best kept secret for many years. Today, they have three more boutiques in Belgrano, Palermo and Recoleta.

Mamuschka

One of several premier chocolatiers to have come out of Bariloche, Mamushka is a long-time favorite of Argentines. Their range of products are made of the highest quality ingredients, and never include conservatives or additives. Try their specialty “chocolate en rama” (chocolate branches), or their award winning Dark Berries & Flowers truffle. Their larger stores are in Patagonia, but luckily, they have also set up a small spot in the Recoleta mall.

Compañía de Chocolates

Crafted with premier chocolate sourced from Venezuela, Brazil, Madagascar, and Ecuador, flavor is the name of the game at Compañía de Chocolates. Here you can find curry spiced bonbons, yerba mate infused chocolate, and jasmine truffles, along with more traditional flavors. Their Palermo and Recoleta locations also offer a delicious range of ice creams and baked goods, ensuring you’ll be able to satisfy whatever your sweet tooth is craving.

Rapanui

Founded in Bariloche by the son of an Italian chocolate maker, Rapanui has remained a mainstay in Argentina’s chocolate scene for many years. Thanks to their tried and true formula of high quality ingredients, secret family recipes, and traditional techniques, Rapanui has a reputation for being one of the top chocolate and ice cream shop in Buenos Aires. Make sure to sample one of their “ositos.” These tiny milk chocolate bears are filled with rich and creamy dulce de leche and are guaranteed to melt in your mouth. They now have seven locations in Buenos Aires, mostly concentrated in the Recoleta and Palermo neighborhoods.

Tienda Kakawa

While many chocolatiers emphasize tradition, Kawaka aims for innovation and modernity in their chocolate creations. Their offerings include painted metallic truffles and perfectly geometric bonbons filled with unexpected flavor combinations– white chocolate and ginger, hot pepper dark chocolate, lemon and pistachio—perfect for the adventurous palate. For those interested in learning their techniques, Kawaka also offers a chocolate making class at their atelier in Belgrano.

Vassalisa

Newer to the scene, yet one of the most popular chocolatiers in the city, Vassalisa was founded by a mother-daughter duo that came from a long line of Russian chocolate makers. Their combination of premium ingredients, and skilled craftsmanship result in delicious and silky chocolate creations. The cherry on top is the whimsical packaging that makes for beautiful gifts.
