Brunch in Buenos Aires is gaining ground, but not always around the corner. We list off where to go for the best eggs, biscuits and more for 2018.

Many people around the world consider breakfast to be the most important meal of the day, and these days, it seems “brunching” is more a way of life than a simple weekend ritual. So, visitors coming to Argentina may be surprised to learn that the whole brunch concept hasn’t totally caught on the same way as it has in other countries.

When it comes to breakfast, Porteños are more likely to grab a quick cortado and medialuna than indulge in the full spread you’re probably used to, complete with eggs Benedict, flapjacks, fruit salad, cinnamon buns, Instagram-worthy cappuccinos, and bottomless mimosas. But don’t get us wrong; things have certainly come a long way compared to what was available just a few years ago.

So if you find yourself in Buenos Aires with a hankering for huevos or hashbrowns, pop into one of these restaurants and get your brunch on.

Salvaje Bakery
Dorrego 1829, Palermo Hollywood

Tucked away in a space that was formerly a mechanic shop in the Palermo Hollywood neighborhood is Salvaje Bakery. It’s arguably one of the best newcomers to Buenos Aires’ culinary scene in recent memory. A playlist of rock n roll classics fills the air, accompanied by the mouthwatering aromas of freshly baked bread. But this joint serves up much more than the every day loaves of your typical neighborhood bakery. Locals and tourists can be found posting up in the casual indoor-outdoor space at all hours of the day, but their brunch menu is a real crowd pleaser. Some must-try menu items include the Tabbouleh salad and bondiola braseada. And don’t forget to pair your order with one of the stars of their cocktail list, like a spicy Bloody Mary or refreshing Aperol Spritz.

Ninina
Gorriti 4738, Palermo Soho

Anyone looking for a one-stop shop that combines high quality coffee, delicious dishes, and picture-perfect aesthetics need not look any further than Ninina. Although located in Palermo Soho, the eatery would easily fit right in with the cool kid cafes lining the streets of New York’s trendiest neighborhoods. To paint a picture, think white marble countertops, subway tiling, wooden plank floors and rose gold accents throughout. Here you can find brunch favorites like farm-fresh egg omelets and avocado toast, as well as harder-to-find specialties such as organic jams and homemade bagels with smoked salmon. But be prepared for to wait, especially on weekends when people stampede to this Palermo hot spot.

Las Violetas
Rivadavia 3899, Almagro

This iconic café first opened its doors in 1884 and has been attracting loyal patrons ever since. Although Las Violetas has undergone a few renovations and remodels over the decades, this historic site still retains all of its charm, thanks to design details like their vaulted ceilings, stained glass windows, and ornate columns. This Almagro staple effortlessly transports diners back to a bygone era, and it’s a great place to enjoy lighter fare, like specialty teas, classic pastries, and finger sandwiches. Head over with a group, or pop in solo to fully appreciate this slice of Buenos Aires history.

Oui Oui
Nicagragua 6068, Palermo Hollywood

Francophiles will feel right at home at Oui Oui. This cozy French-inspired cafe was one of the very first brunch spots to open in Buenos Aires back in 2005. Today, it’s revered as a catalyst that proved the city was indeed ready to bring the brunch concept into Argentina’s gastronomical mix. The best part about Oui Oui isn’t their killer croissants or delicious salads, but the fact that they serve their brunch menu all day long – so don’t feel guilty for sleeping in past noon after partying way past sunrise. Enjoy the homey vibe inside or snag a seat at one of their signature pink tables out front to soak up the sun while stuffing your face.

Elena
Posadas 1086, Recoleta

Every once in a while, you just need to treat yourself to baller brunch – and we don’t blame you. Maybe you’re celebrating a birthday, maybe a friend’s in town, or maybe you just want to go all out for no real reason at all. Whatever the motivation, Elena is the place to do it. Located within the Four Seasons Buenos Aires in Recoleta, this eatery is a top-notch destination for epicures, and even earned a spot on Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants. The two-story courtyard is a stunning space with inviting interiors and rich accents, like tufted leather bench seating, a dramatic spiral staircase, and locally sourced antiques. Go for their assortment of artisanal cheeses, Birchermüesli, or fresh-squeezed juices. And if you’re feeling extra indecisive, just opt for the full breakfast buffet.

Chicken Bros.
Thames 1795, Palermo Soho

For a classic American-style brunch, check out the Sexy Sunday Brunch at Chicken Bros. Trust us, you won’t be disappointed. Two friends from the USA opened the popular Palermo spot, so it’s no shock that they’ve pulled out all the stops for a solid brunch experience. The whole philosophy is centered on three pillars they’ve dubbed “booze, beats, and eats.” We’re talking dishes like authentic buttermilk biscuits, smoked bacon, fried chicken and waffles (obviously), and libations like made-to-order Apostoles Gin cocktails and Bloody Marys with all the fixings. Grab a stool inside while enjoying live musical guests, or post up at a sidewalk table to meet fellow expats and tourists.

Sheikob’s Bagels
Uriarte 1386, Palermo Soho

Legit NY style bagels have finally arrived. Jacob (or pronounced “Sheikob” in Argentina) has been rolling out bagels and pedaling them in front of the BA cafe scene since 2015. The now permanent fixture in Palermo is offering a tasty variety of schmears, bagel sandwiches, Colombian roast drip coffee and homemade celery soda-pop. The lemon, dill cream cheese with beets on an everything bagel? What more could you ask for on Sunday morning. Expect all the usual bagel shop fixings; lox, pickled onions, capers, and of course a solid bacon, egg and cheese.
