Buenos Aires most northeastern neighborhood, Núñez is sandwiched in between main avenue Cabildo and the massive Río de la Plata.

La Onda (The Vibe): Núñez is a more residential neighborhood running the edge of the border of Capital Federal and the suburbs of provincia. An upper-middle class area, the barrio has a nice mixture of tall buildings lining the main avenues and typical Porteño houses filling in the smaller side streets.

Highlights:
-River Plate stadium, the largest stadium in Argentina
-Parque Norte, massive water park with several pools, slides and soccer fields
-Tierra Santa, the Jesus theme park
-Parque de los Niños

Attractions: Attractions are fairly limited here. Most of the neighborhood is content with its upscale housing and quiet streets. Only two plazas lie within the belly of this vicinity; Plaza Balcarce and Plaza Félix Lima.

If you are in search of a nice sports club to join, several are scattered around the shore area. Note that most are private and will require a membership for entry. Many have large aquatic facilities, soccer fields, tennis courts and more. Some of these facilities are surrounded by spacious recreational areas for outdoor parrillas and picnics like Parque de los Niños.

Parque de los Niños (Children’s park) is a massive 75+ acre park running along the Río de la Plata. The spacious area has wide open fields, paved sidewalks lining the river, public beaches and plenty of picnic areas to choose from. The park is not the easiest to get to with public transportation so consider a taxi or Uber (if Uber is legal as they are in and out of court here).

Parque Norte and Tierra de Santa are both great off the beaten path things to do in Buenos Aires. Parque Norte is a huge aquatic facility with several pools, soccer fields, water slides and general areas for relaxing in the sun. This is the beach for those that do not have time to escape to the real beaches 3 hours south.

Tierra Santa is a Jesus theme park. Need we say more?

If you are studying at the Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA) School of Science (Facultad de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales) this neighborhood would be a good choice. You’ll be within walking distance and the area is very conducive to the studious.

The Escuela de Suboficiales de Mecánica de la Armada or ESMA is located in this zone. This complex was the hub for many of the misdeeds of the Dirty War and since, has been converted into a museum. The ESMA was the largest compound of its kind and was base to the infamous Unidad de Tareas 3.3.2 or Task Unit 3.3.2, which was in charge of kidnapping and torturing any “enemies” located in Capital Federal and parts of the Greater Buenos Aires providence.

River Plate stadium during a game in Nunez, Buenos Aires

River Plate Stadium is the main attraction in the Núñez/Belgrano area. Although the stadium is technically in Belgrano it is so close to the border that travelers and residents equate it with Núñez. This is a large soccer (fútbol) stadium that is home turf for one of the most popular soccer teams in Buenos Aires, River Plate. The stadium is often used to house the bigger name concerts or festivals that have included musicians like Madonna, U2, The Police, The Rolling Stones, Red Hot Chili Peppers and many others in recent years. Argentina’s national soccer team frequently plays at River’s stadium for their world cup qualifier matches when “at home”.

History: Núñez was founded by Don Florencio Emeterio Núñez. In 1873, the railroad and station for which Núñez had donated this land was completed and connected. The land was then sectioned off and developed into a residential area.

The most northeasterly neighborhood of Capital Federal, this neighborhood is peppered with housing and apartment complexes. Commercial activity is particularly fervent along the large Avenues Libertador and Cabildo.
