Thank you for throwing this in! I am finishing my Ph.D. in Art History and confirm that this hooves business is just a myth. I couldn't have said it better myself. Thank you Urban Myth Police!

Friedrich Nietzche also reportedly died of syphilis. Was Pedro de Mendoza (alledgedly) knocking his sister off too?

What does all foor hooves up mean? Amazing hero on a levitating horse!

I'm sorry, but the hooves up or on the floor theory is an urban myth. Probably created by bored tour guides. Perhaps some sculptors in some parts of the world adopt it, but most of the time, the position of the horses hooves is just for aesthetic reasons, nothing more.

STATUES FOR DUMMIES:
Next time when you see a statue with the revered on a horse:
*one hoof up, died from a battle wound.
*two hooves up, died on the battle field.
*four legs down, died of natural causes.

Although in the case of Belgrano, his statue is embellished. His statue has one hoof up, but Belgrano died of syphillis.

Thanks for the info--I love random history information. One question, I heard that the stance of the statues (i.e when a horse's foot is raised or the soldier has his sword in the air) each means something different. Have you heard any of this and do you know the choreography of the statues?
