Life in Buenos Aires would not be complete without the tango experience. Late-night milongas, flashy shows, and dramatic music can be found everywhere in this city, from the streets of San Telmo to underground clubs in Abasto. One of the most unforgettable elements of tango is, of course, the shoes. My search for the most elegant tango shoe has taken me from Microcentro to Congreso. To save you the trip, here’s a few of my personal favorites.
For the true professional tango dancer, Tango Brujo cannot be beat. With a variety of styles and heel sizes, this is the place to find the most durable tango shoe you can imagine. While most of the touristy tango stores offer slick soles, Tango Brujo’s suede ones will make these last through as many shows and impromptu street performances as you like. If you’re worried about fumbling through your first tango performance, fear not. The suede soles make slippage highly unlikely. If you’re a more advanced dancer, Tango Brujo offers a line specially designed for professionals. And with a wide variety of colors such as blue, purple, gold, and of course, the traditional black, high style is always a priority at TB.
Not only are the shoes spectacular, but the dresses are tempting whether you’re a dancer or not. The exquisite lace, classic beading, and sparkly glitter cannot help but attract attention. Most importantly, the clothes at Tango Brujo are constructed with the highest quality and attention to detail, which makes them utterly worth the price tag. In short, if you’re after elegance, high design, and durability, Tango Brujo’s (Esmeralda 754) the place for you.
As much as I love TB, when it comes to breathtaking tango shoes, I can’t resist Comme il Faut. Hidden down an alley off Arenales in Recoleta, walking into Comme il Faut is a girl’s dream. Boxes of one of a kind designs lie scattered across the floor as women swoon over the heels I consider the Manolo Blahniks of Argentina (without the price tag). Handcrafted in premium leather and show-stopping colors, these might as well be declared the sexiest shoes on the market in BA. And forget about selecting your shoe from a wall of choices, at this tango haven each pair is entirely unique and made in a few select sizes. Expect to try on a minimum of five pairs, as once the sales girl knows your size and color choices, she will bring every
corresponding pair possible. Shopping at Comme il Faut (Arenales 1239 door 3 apt. M) is not only a joy, it’s an unforgettable experience.
For an alternative look, Fabio Shoes (Riobamba 10, floor 10 apt A) offers the tango sneaker. Comfortable, flexible, and convenient for practicing, this is the new concept in the world of tango. Although Fabio designs mostly men’s styles, many can be custom converted into a woman’s shoe through the addition of a heel or a little glitter. If comfort is your top priority, stop by Fabio in Congreso and pick up a pair of sporty sneakers for your next rehearsal.
While fabulousness abounds at these three stores, there are a few tourist traps to avoid while shopping for tango shoes in Buenos Aires. In general, if the sign or slogan of the store is printed in english, you’re out of luck. Look for authentic spanish advertising and you’re definitely closer to finding what you want.
Once you’ve entered the store of your choice, tried on your favorite pair, and are ready to pull out your wallet, stop and look at the heel. Many plastic heels are glued on precariously and can eventually wear down. On certain pairs, you can often spot the dried glue clinging to the sides of the shoe. As soon as this fatal mistake becomes clear, my recommendation is to say a polite thank you and walk out of the store. One place I noticed shoddy construction was La Vikinga. From visible glue to thin soles to heel bases out of alignment, this showroom made every possible mistake in quality. Trust me, ladies. It’s not worth spending money on a faulty product, no matter how appealing the price may be. The key point is, pay attention to details, keep your eye out for truly authentic dancewear and you won’t be disappointed.
After you’ve purchased your tango outfit, don’t miss the Tango Festival currently taking place in Buenos Aires. From live dance shows to concerts, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Check out the Argentinean government website for a schedule of all events and locations.
The range of style choices in this city is endless, and a closet in Buenos Aires is not complete without a few tango essentials. Let your gorgeous shoes and stunning dress take you over. The heart of tango beats in this city.
