Shockingly bright colors, geometric patterns, fabrics that sparkle, and a vintage sensibility. These are a few hallmarks of the rising trend in avant-garde clothing design in Buenos Aires. If you’re looking for the traditional little black dress, look elsewhere. The following pioneers of the avant-garde design movement will leave you speechless with their exquisite clothes tailored for the true fashionista.

One of the most well-known names in wild design is Amores Trash Couture (Angel Carranza 1979). Through the use of stretchy fabrics that hug your curves and interesting additions such as colorful gems and stamped blouses, Amores Trash is the essence of eclectic. If you’re really adventurous, try the electric blue leggings with cutouts up the side. That’ll get you some attention. Or the high waisted bloomers that leave very little to the imagination. At this white washed stored on Carranza, expect to find an emphasis on geometric patterns, from squares to triangles to cones. The new collection thoroughly captures the image of the untamed woman walking the streets with confidence. Amores Trash Couture in two words: so fierce.

Perhaps the king of avant-garde couture, Martin Churba’s Tramando (Rodriguez Peña 1973) has captured my heart on several occasions. His “linea de alta costura” utilizes painted rubber to emphasize the shape of a woman’s body. From elegant dresses accented with knots and keyholes to strappy tops that evoke the concept of the captured woman dying to break free, Churba’s creativity is unparalleled in the fashion industry. His signature rubber fabric coated with shiny paint in gold, coral and metallic black create the illusion of an outfit made of jewelry, and the ability to layer his pieces to create a daring look makes his couture line extremely versatile. For your upcoming cocktail party, a stop at Tramando’s Maison on Rodriguez Peña is an absolute must.

The world of avant-garde design is also dotted with young, inventive newcomers. Designer Agustina of Casa Visentini (info@casavisentini.com.ar www.casavisentini.com.ar)can be described as the thinking woman’s couturier. Her designs are inspired by the work of Kandinsky and Aristotle, and this dedication to the work of ancient geniuses shows in her collections. In the mixture of colors and patterns, she has created deceivingly simple designs that draw the eye with their classic tailoring and attention to detail. Agustina believes strongly in the notion of constant invention and reinvention, and the idea of using fashion to capture the essence of a woman. Her all-black winter collection harkened back to 1940’s elegance, yet her new summer collection is modern and colorful. Imagine airy green dresses and my personal favorite red top with dangling beaded black fringe. She uses only the highest quality fabrics, and comfort is one of her top priorities. Casa Visentini exemplifies highend avant-garde design, yet maintains a wearable essence. Simply brilliant.

Although somewhat more subdued, Patt Couture (info@pattcouture.com, www.pattcouture.com) also epitomizes the concept of wearable avant-garde. In this Barrio Norte showroom, expect to find printed silk shorts and mini corsets combined with pleated skirts. The star of the collection is a black evening gown with a hot pink bust line. Although it sounds dramatic, it is utterly chic. Show up at a cocktail party in this dress and I guarantee that no other lady in the room will be wearing anything quite as lovely. The colors in the collection range from delicate baby pink to bright green, so whether you’re into staying classic or going bold, you’ll find just the right piece for you at Patt Couture.

The movement towards avant-garde design in Buenos Aires is absolutely magical. These
clothes cannot be found anywhere else in the world, so if you’re after true Argentine wearable
art, you’re in for a treat.
