Looking for a reprieve from the hustle and bustle of Buenos Aires? Estancias are the traditional cattle ranches in the Argentine countryside, perfect for a relaxing day trip or serene weekend getaway.

Gauchos are the Argentinean cowboys that symbolize bravery, and the traditional way of life in Argentina. Havens for authentic gaucho culture, estancias are known for having livestock, horses, traditional barbecues or asados, and folklore performances. Luckily for those staying in Buenos Aires, there’s no need to hop on a plane to experience an estancia. After just a 1-2-hour bus ride away you can be lounging by a pool, enjoying a horseback ride through lush greenery, or savoring a tender cut of steak in the countryside. While there are countless estancias within the Buenos Aires province, which one you choose should depend on the type of experience you’re after. Whether you’re looking for an authentic gaucho adventure, a luxurious stay in a castle, or to get in a round of golf, here are some of our favorite estancias close to Buenos Aires.

Ombu: Best country day experience

Nestled in the Pampas, about an hour and a half outside of Buenos Aires, Ombu is routinely rated as one of the best estancias the region. As a fully operational cattle ranch that’s been on the scene for many years, this Estancia offers an enjoyable and classic estancia experience. Complete with horseback rides, a pool, ping-pong, volleyball, an asado lunch, Malbec, and traditional Argentinean mate, Estancia Ombu provides everything you need for a great day in the Argentine countryside. Puesto Viejo, which is only located about 45 minutes outside of Buenos Aires is the best place to get a taste of the “sport of kings,” no matter your experience level with polo or horseback riding. The day includes morning and evening classes with experienced instructors that’ll have you cleaning striking the ball by the end of the day. In the break between lessons, you can enjoy refreshments, lunch, and leisure time on the expansive 250-acre property.

Villa Maria: The most picturesque estancia

From the 100-year old ivy covered Tudor mansion, to the sprawling 1,500 acres of land filled with leafy trees, roaming horses and ponds, Estancia Villa Maria is filled with post card worthy sights. During the day, you can ride horses, explore the grounds on bike, lounge by the pool, or play tennis. Later you can expect folklore performances and a three course asado complete with Malbec from the underground wine cellar. Located just 45 minutes away in Ezeiza, this estancia makes for a very convenient weekend getaway. Or, due to its proximity to the airport, could be the perfect place to spend either your first or last night of your trip.

La Bandada: The best culinary experience

La Bandada is a recently restored 19th century colonial estancia that retains all of its tradition and charm. Located 2 hours to the southwest of Buenos Aires, La Bandada provides a serene escape from the city where you can go horseback riding or take a swim. Where they really shine though, is the cuisine. Chef Mariana Dacruz uses the best cuts of meat and seasonal vegetables grown in the garden to create a delicious farm to table experience. From the fresh jams made with fruits plucked from the orchard for breakfast, to the traditional afternoon asado, you can expect a mouthwatering culinary experience at La Bandada.

Estancia La Candelaria: The most luxurious estancia experience

While staying at Estancia La Candelaria, it’s easy to forget you’re in Argentina and not relaxing in the French countryside. This estancia, which is a literal castle on forested grounds, is the epitome of Parisian luxury. From the ornate and spacious rooms to the high-end creole cuisine, this estancia is one of the best in Argentina. La Candelaria is located just two hours outside of Buenos hours but will transport you to another world.

Estancia La Eloísa: Best estancia to play a round of golf

Buenos Aires may not be known for golf courses, but 2 hours outside of Buenos Aires, Estancia Eloísa combines traditional gaucho culture with a 9-hole par 36 course. In addition to golf, their offerings include tennis courts, horseback rides, carriage rides, pools and soccer fields.
