Looking for something sweet to accompany your coffee or perhaps a gift to bring back from Argentina? Look no further than the alfajor; a compact and decadent treat popular among Argentines and visitors alike.

Both delicious and traditional, the classic Argentine alfajor (pronounced Al-fa-hor) consists of two cookies sandwiching a dollop of creamy dulce de leche, and coated in chocolate. However, variations made with jams, merengues, mouses and coconut are also common. Every region has their own mouthwatering specialty. There are hundreds of brands, and countless styles of alfajores readily available at corner stores, specialty shops and cafes, but not all of them are created equal. Here are our recommendations for the tastiest alfajores that Argentina has to offer and where to find them in Buenos Aires.

The best traditional alfajores

Cachafaz

Cachafaz was Founded in 2001 by three brothers in the outskirts of Buenos Aires who produced their alfajores in their kitchen and distributed them by bicycle. Fast forward 20 years and they are now one of the most premium and recognizable brands in Buenos Aires. Made with high quality ingredients and traditional recipes, they offer a great introduction into the delectable world of alfajores. Their flagship stores are located in Recoleta and Microcentro, but their products can also be purchased from many cafes, kiosks and specialty shops throughout the city.

Havanna

Like watching futbol and eating steak, enjoying a coffee accompanied with an alfajor is a classic Argentine pastime. To do as the locals do, head to Havanna, one of the most popular cafes in the city, and give the 70% cacao a try. The bitterness of the dark chocolate perfectly balances the sweetness of the dulce de leche, resulting in a delicious alfajor that isn’t overwhelmingly rich. With locations in almost every neighborhood in Buenos Aires, these are some of the most readily available alfajores. They are also one of the brands consistently stocked in the airport stores in case you forgot to grab a box before returning home.

The best fruity alfajores

Memorable

Filled with berry marmalades, and coated in semi-sweet chocolate, Memorable offers fruity and floral alfajor flavors that are lighter than their dulce de leche filled counterparts. Memorable crafts their artesanal alfajores using local fruits native to Patagonia, such as calafate and boysenberry. Producing their alfajores in the Patagonian providence of Chubut, they can also be found at various markets and health food stores in Buenos Aires.

Estancia El Rosario

Nestled in the Cordoba foothills, Estancia El Rosario opened in 1924 as a jam and biscuit factory and has since evolved into one of the top Alfajor producers in the region. The alfajores are coated with a sweet sugary glaze rather than chocolate, and filled with mixed fruit jams, or dulce de leche. If you spend any time in Corodoba, the estancia, which also offers alfajor making lessons and tours of the factory, is worth a visit. Otherwise, there are several specialty markets that stock them in Buenos Aires.

The best unique Alfajores

Goulue

Malbec wine and alfajores; two of Argentina’s greatest loves and most delicious commodities. If you can’t decide which to bring back as a gift, Goulue alfajores are here to solve your dilemma. Chocolate cookies spread with a thin layer of dulce de leche and a Malbec reduction, dipped in Belgian chocolate. These alfajores are a delectable union of classic Argentine flavors. Their boutique is located outside of the capital in Jardin Lomas de Palomar. But, their malbec alfajores, along with the rest of their line of wine infused chocolate products can also be purchased from many chocolate and wine shops around the city.

Entre Dos

Known for their unusual flavors, Entre Dos produces unique and high quality alfajores out of Mendoza. Perfect for the adventurous palate, their offerings include rum soaked chocolate alfajores coated in peanuts, and a dark chocolate jalapeño alfajor filled with dulce de leche. If you don’t have the opportunity to visit one of their stores in Mendoza, their alfajores can be purchased at DDl & Co. at their San Telmo, Palermo, and Microcentro locations.
